Description
In the past 1000 years, the Mississippi river has meandered and captured the Red river [of the South], which flows from Texas and Arkansas south to the Gulf of Mexico. This has resulted in a new distributary: the Atchafalaya. Due to prevailing laws of fluvial geomorphology, the Atachafalaya may be poised to eventually capture the mainstem Mississippi river.
