The angels were excited about God’s wondrous gift to the world. His only begotten Son had been born! Our Messiah and Savior! God first promised this gift in Genesis 3:15. There He warned Satan that a day was coming when He would bring sinful people back to Himself. And that day will come through the “seed of the woman.”
This phrase is not used anywhere else in Scripture. All other references talk about the “seed of the man.” Genesis 3:15 is God’s first reference to the virgin birth where no man and no “seed of man” was involved. Only the “seed of the woman” in a supernatural birth, conceived by the Holy Spirit.
Since the day of God’s warning to Satan, the angels impatiently looked forward to its fulfillment in history. I imagine them frequently asking God when this wonderful thing would happen. When would His Son be sent to earth? Each time I hear God saying, “Please be patient. I will do it at just the right time.”
Now the right time had come! It was the middle of the night in Bethlehem. The angels were so excited about this fulfillment of God’s promise they could hardly restrain themselves. They loudly announced this wonderful news to a group of dirty, smelly shepherds working the night shift in the hills just outside the city.
Today’s carol also tells us it was not only the angels who were singing. Even the mountains echoed back the marvelous news that the Messiah had been born. All creation sang, “Gloria in excelsis deo,” which is Latin for “Glory to God in the highest!” What a marvelous birth announcement!
