Can you picture it? A multitude of the heavenly hosts, jubilantly singing praise to God in vibrant harmony. The joyous refrain echoing off the mountains in a triumphant declaration of the arrival of Jesus Christ, God’s greatest gift to mankind. This symphonic proclamation from God’s messengers was a song of invitation to come and celebrate the birth of the babe in Bethlehem. The Savior has come! God’s promise fulfilled!
 
Imagine being one of the shepherds watching their flocks peacefully on the hillside that night. At first terrified at the arrival of the angel messenger, their fear instantly turned to joy at the sound of the angels’ voices. The biblical account in Luke chapter 2, tells us that the shepherds didn’t hesitate to respond. They high-tailed it into town to see the newborn King.
 
So why did God send the angels to lowly shepherds, all alone on the hillside? Why didn’t He proclaim His message to the crowds in Bethlehem or to people of more importance in that day, such as prophets and teachers? The answer is clear. God’s purpose was to reveal Jesus’ birth to people regarded as outcasts of Jewish society, to show that He came to earth for all people, regardless of social status, wealth, intellect or popularity. He came to earth to offer salvation to all who would believe. There are few Christmas carols that describe so assuredly the joy the world felt when the Savior was born in Bethlehem. The chorus Gloria in exclesis Deo translates “Glory to God in the Highest”. He alone is worthy of our praise and unwavering gratitude for loving us so much that he sent His only son to earth to pay the price for our sins.
 
Let us join with the angels in lifting our voices, singing Glory to God for His most perfect gift!
