Description
In einer kleinen Conditorei (In a Little Confectionery) Tango (F. Raymond /E.Neubach)- Homocord-Orchester mit Gesang: Luigi Bernauer, Homocord 1929 (Germany)
NOTE: This Freddy Raymond's tango - with outstanding text by Ernst Neubach - is for me one of the most "gemütlich" (cozy) songs ever composed. The so a simple and jingling just like a little music-box melody, plus text make a lovely, memorable hit that has been sung by generations.
So much happens in that little text! A couple of young lovers sit by the table in a small confectionery (or rather, a Berlin style little coffee-shop with only three-four tables) - talking for the first time about love, over "kuchen und tee" (cakes and tea) - fur Zwei! (two cups!) they ordered...and now, comes a thing which always brought me almost into extasy: the text goes like: "und das Elektrische Klavier, das klimpert leise"... (...an electric piano is strumming a slow tune)! I do not know any other song, where the "electric piano" exists! That's why, I absolutely love this tango.
In Polish, the song's title went even more "cozy": "W maleńkiej CICHEJ tej kawiarence" (In that little SILENT cafe) Also, Polish lyrics changed "electric piano" into "electric little piano" which "played in a niche" ("a elektryczny fortepianik grał we wnęce"...). Simply, a delight!
Luigi BERNAUER (ne: Ludwig Bernhuber) was a Viennese cabaret actor and singer with a nice velvety baritone, who in late 1920s and thru 1930s tied his career with Berlin. Alas, after the whole decade of successful recording of dozens hits and refrains with all possible German dance orchestras, and for all possible record companies in Germany - that choice finally, meant a disaster for him. Included into a group of popular artists who were performing on the front for Wehmacht soldiers, in January 1945 in Oslo, Norway he was killed during some military action, in last days of the 2nd WW.
