Description

Moving from Greenwood, Mississippi to Chicago, Illinois in 1957, Betty Everett left her church roots for secular music in the big city. She had a lot of exposure with other music people and music recording companies while trying to find her niche in the industry. Her big chance came in 1964 when she was with Vee Jay Records in Chicago. Her hit record was "The Shoop Shoop Song released in February 1964 which propelled her into the spotlight. While at Vee Jay Records, she was pared with Jerry Butler for duets. Their recording of "Let It Be Me", released in August 1964, gained her national attention. In 1968, Betty Everett was now with Uni Records when she recorded "There'll Come A Time" which put her back in the public's eye. Her singing career began to suffer in the 1980 and she became simi-retired and move to Beloit, Wisconsin where her sister lived. In 2000, she made her last public appearance on the PBS special Doo Wop 51 along with her former singing partner, Jerry Butler which "brought the house down".
Everett died at her home in Beloit on August 19, 2001. She was 61 years old.
