Description
December is a song by the American alternative rock band Collective Soul, released on their self-titled album in 1995. The song was written by the lead singer and guitarist Ed Roland, who said it was about “the challenge of finding balance in life and relationships”.
December was a huge hit for Collective Soul, reaching number one on the Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart for nine weeks, becoming the most successful song of 1995 on that chart. It also peaked at number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 14 on the Mainstream Top 40 chart. The song was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1996, but lost to Alanis Morissette’s You Oughta Know.
The band was once invited to perform at the Woodstock '99 festival, which was a celebration of the 30th anniversary of the original Woodstock festival. The band played a memorable set that included December, as well as other hits like Shine, The World I Know, and Heavy. The band was praised for their energetic and engaging performance, and for bringing some of the spirit of the original Woodstock to the event. The band later said that it was one of the highlights of their career.
