Bowie originally demoed this song under the title 'Song for Marc', inspired by his old friend at a time when T.Rex were at the top of their game and David was just restarting his career as Ziggy Stardust. Once Ziggy was successful and David became a star, a mean-spirited rivalry developed between the two (mostly coming from Marc, it has to be said - he took the mention of T.Rex in All the Young Dudes as a personal insult; but David always adored him and couldn't understand the enmity). Thankfully, they eventually made up and Bowie appeared on Bolan's 'Marc' show on 28 September 1977, 7 days before Marc's untimely death.
