DEAREST DARLING (You’re The One) Huey Smith, Ace #571 1959
Flipside: TU-BER-CU-LUCAS AND THE SINUS BLUES – Here’s a really great uncharted and unknown ballad from my music collection. Huey “Piano” Smith was born January 26, 1934 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is one of the most respected musicians to come from New Orleans. An amazing, trailblazing artist, he was basically a self-taught pianist, composer and arranger writing his first song, "ROBERTSON STREET BOOGIE" at age 8.

By age 15 he started appearing and performing in clubs with his friend Eddie Jones “Guitar Slim” and made his first recordings playing piano behind him at age 17. By age 19, Smith recorded his first single under his own name: "YOU MADE ME CRY"/"YOU'RE DOWN WITH ME", Savoy #1113 (1953).

Huey “Piano” Smith was in demand as a session pianist and played on records by Earl King ("THOSE LONELY LONELY NIGHTS"), Lloyd Price, Little Richard (the first Specialty session) and Smiley Lewis ("I Hear You Knocking"). In 1955, (age 21) he signed with Ace Records and by 1957 he formed Huey "Piano" Smith and His Clowns, with Bobby Marchan.

Huey “Piano” Smith had 4 songs charted nationally on Billboard. His biggest "DON'T YOU JUST KNOW IT" (Ace #545) charted in April, 1958 for 13 weeks and reached #9. It was a giant hit for him.

Smith had composed, arranged and performed "SEA CRUISE" but in 1959, Ace Records erased Smith's vocal track from the recording and replaced it with a vocal track by the white singer Frankie Ford. It then became the classic hit we know for Ford.

Among the many other artists who recorded for Ace Records best known were Jimmy Clanton and Joe Tex.

Enjoy this really great unknown ballad “DEAREST DARLING” by the “legendary” Huey “Piano” Smith.
