Description
Track 5 from the album “Duane & Greg Allman” released in 1972 copyright Bold Records. The album was released six months after Duane’s death in October, 1971. He died four days after their breakthrough live album “At Fillmore East” had achieved Gold status. This is a collection of early demos from 1968 recorded in Miami with Butch Truck’s folk-rock band “The 31st of February.” Duane and Gregg had their own band “Hourglass” at the time but were considering joining forces with Trucks’ band. The album features impressive covers, as well as the earliest recording of “Melissa” and Gregg’s tribute to Martin Luther King, “God Rest His Soul.” Gregg was destitute at the time and sold the rights to both those songs to producer Steve Alaimo for six hundred dollars. Recorded from the original vinyl. Written by Gregg Allman and produced by Steve Alaimo. RIP Duane Allman, Butch Trucks & Gregory Lenoir Allman. Featuring:
Duane Allman – Lead & rhythm guitars
Gregg Allman – Lead vocals & Hammond B-3 organ
Scott Boyer – Acoustic guitar & background vocals
David Brown – Bass
Butch Trucks – Drums & percussion
Crossroads seem to come and go, whoa, whoa
The gypsy flies from coast to coast
Knowing many, loving none
Having sorrow, having fun
But back home he'll always run to see Melissa
Freight train, each car looks the same
And no one knows the gypsy's name
And no one hears his lonely sighs
There are no blankets where he lies
In deepest dreams, the gypsy flies with sweet Melissa
Again the morning's come, again he's on the run
A sunbeam's shinin' through his hair, appearin' not to have a care
Pick up your gear and gypsy roll on, roll on
Crossroads, will you ever let him go, whoa, whoa?
Or will you hide the dead man's ghost?
Will he lie beneath the clay or will his spirit float away?
But I know that he won't stay without Melissa
But I know that he won't stay without Melissa
Yeah, but I know that he won't stay without Melissa
Yeah
