Pronounced uh-CHA-fuh-LIE-uh, the word “atchafalaya” has roots in the Choctaw language and means “long river.” Long indeed. The Atchafalaya River is a distributary channel of the Mississippi River and flows 137 miles through south-central Louisiana -- the heart of Cajun country -- to the Gulf of Mexico.

The river basin, at almost a million acres, is the largest river swamp in the country and provides habitat for over 100 species of shrimp, fish, crab, and crawfish (22 million pounds of crawfish alone are harvest every year). The Atchafalaya Basin was designated a National Heritage Area, which helps to protect the landscape and seascape. Come see it for yourself.
