Giovanni Morandi was the second child of Pietro Morandi (1745-1818) and Teresa Saraceni in Pergola. Pietro was himself a composer, organist and Chapel master at the cathedral in Pergola (You can listen to two of Pietro’s harpsichord sonatas here: https://youtu.be/2MHnUPGg9Mo ).
Thus it was only natural that Giovanni learn music from his father. In 1803, at the age of 26, Giovanni had obtained a post as “harpsichord master” at the theater in Senigallia; there, he was also choirmaster, and was soon teaching music as well. The following year, Giovanni married one of his singing pupils, Rosa Paulina Gertrude Morolli (1782-1824); she began her successful singing career in 1804, the year of their marriage. For many years, she had singing engagements in many cities in Italy, as well as in Paris. The couple made the acquaintance of many famous singers and composers, including Donizetti and Farinelli, who composed arias for Rosa to sing. Sadly, she passed away at the age of only 42, whereupon Giovanni returned to Senigallia. There, he founded a “Society for the Friends of Music”, as well as a school of music; he also taught music at two monasteries. Morandi is recognized as perhaps the most important Italian organist in the early to mid 19th century. The present work – a lively rondo – was written for organ, yet is quite playable on the harpsichord as well.
