Description
Bruce (Utah) Phillips had a very varied career. According to Wikipedia: Bruce Duncan "Utah" Phillips (May 15, 1935 – May 23, 2008) was an American labor organizer, folk singer, storyteller, poet and the "Golden Voice of the Great Southwest". He described the struggles of labor unions and the power of direct action, self-identifying as an anarchist. He often promoted the Industrial Workers of the World in his music, actions, and words.
After his discharge from the army, he spent a number of years riding the rails. i.e. he was a hobo, travelling around the country from town to town hiding in box cars on the railroads. His love for trains is expressed in the lyrics of this song which mourns the loss of the steam trains which of course have now been superseded by diesel and/or electric trains.
