Great hit of late 1920s in whole Europe and not only ! Being a tango it even crossed Anglo-American borders, rather hermetic for this kind of pop music.
Recorded also in Poland, both in a vocal and instrumental version; the latter one, made by an exclusive orchestra of Henryk Gold is presented herewith.
In the video there may be seen labels of various records with this melody, from various countries as well as a Polish sheet music in a few detailed parts of that edition.
A sort of a relish may be two photographs of the
Polish artist, patron of the present channel, Lili Larys
at the "Konditorei table", taken in "Palais de danse",
Poznań, 1933, who is sitting there with her sister
(on the left), Cecylia. "Palais de danse" was
a complex of buildings - cinemas, cabarets,
restaurants, cafes - situated along the "Pasaż
Apollo" which is still joining two streets in
Poznań: Piekary and Ratajczak's. Nearly all
these buildings were ruined during war actions
by the end of WW2.
Lili Larys was performing there in 1933 and - that happened in her life - fell in love and decided
to make her home in that city. Only until August 30th,
1939, however, when feverishly packing her
belongings decided to escape Eastward
with a hope that it might be the right decision
in view of what was going to happen only two days
later, from the Western direction.
