Hey the World: the Aesthetics of Kunqu Opera

Born in Macao, Li Huiyin is deeply overwhelmed by the beauty of Kunqu—a form of Chinese opera that first debuted in Jiangsu and Zhejiang 600 years ago. Li is now the president of the General Assembly of Chinese Kunqu Culture Association of Macao. To know the reason behind her fondness for Kunqu, we’ll have to understand this form of art first.

In fact, Kunqu was once the pinnacle of the hundred Chinese opera schools. It was developed in the 14th century in Kunshan, Suzhou, China, and has then dominated the Chinese theater for over 300 years. In 2001, Kunqu was included in UNESCO’s first batch of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

It was in 2005 that Li’s story with Kunqu began. She was captivated by this art after watching Mr. Bai Xiangyong’s youthful edition of The Peony Pavilion at a theater in Macao. In 2012, she got a chance to visit Nanjing where she found her Kunqu teacher with luck and began to learn this fine art. Now it is her tenth year of Kunqu study.
