Description
There has been a lot of Requests from Spanish, Portuguese and Brazilian listeners to cover more of their musical heritage, so when I got this suggestion, I was intrigued to find that it has been used widely both in Spain, where it stems from, and in Brazil. The first text was written as an anthem of the Liberal resurgence in Spain in 1813, and the tune was composed somewhere between then and 1820, supposedly by the Spanish opera composer José Melchor Gomis y Colomer. In the 1820ies, it was set to a text in Portuguese and used as an independence anthem for Brazil. I based this arrangement on a Brazilian notation of the melody from somewhere between 1826 and 1850.
The image shows the proclamation of Brazilian independence, in a painting from 1888 by Brazilian artist Juan Manuel Blanes.
Enjoy!
