Description

Dave Grohl told Pharrell Williams that his drumming on Nirvana’s landmark Nevermind album was totally inspired by disco bands and Chic’s Tony Thompson.
In a clip from Dave Grohl’s Paramount+ series From Cradle to Stage, the Foo Fighters frontman shares a surprising revelation with Pharrell Williams about the inspiration behind one of rock’s most iconic drum beats. Grohl, the former Nirvana drummer, confesses to Pharrell that despite being praised for his drumming, he considers himself a “basic” drummer. He reveals that much of his drumming on Nirvana’s Nevermind album was heavily influenced by disco beats, specifically borrowing from artists like The Gap Band, Cameo, and Chic’s Tony Thompson.

As the famous riff from “Smells Like Teen Spirit” plays, Grohl mimics the drumming and says, “That’s old disco!” Pharrell, visibly amazed, watches as a clip of The Gap Band’s “You Dropped a Bomb on Me” plays in the background, with Grohl emphasizing the connection. Grohl also shares a moment when he confessed to Tony Thompson that he’d been “ripping him off” for years, to which Thompson simply replied, “I know.”
