Description
This is a song composed and performed by Chauncey Olcott for his musical "Ragged Robin" in 1910, which ran for 16 performances. The musical was set in Innishannon, Ireland, in 1830. Chauncey’s wife, Rita Olcott, co-wrote and produced the production with Rida Johnson Young, who wrote the book the musical is based on. The musical was advertised as: "A Three Act Mystical Irish Idyl rivalling in its charm and perfection the immortal 'Peter Pan'."
Lyrics:
When daylight is fading I wander alone, thro’ wonderful leafy nooks
To try and find out if the fairies are real, or if they just live in books
I like to imagine I live in a land of goblins and elves and sprites
With nothing to do but watch them dance on wonderful moonlight nights
I used to believe that fairies were real in the days gone by
But maybe that’s just a fancy, that only was born to die
I think that I’ve seen them dancing with magical light aglow
I’d like to find out if they do exist. Does anyone really know?
Sometimes I’m lonely and things won’t go right no matter how hard I try
I long for the fairies to help me and make the troublesome hours go by
If I could but leave all my work-a-day woes, and go to some kingdom where
There’s nothing to worry or bother me, I know I’d be happier there
