This movement is taken from the third concert of John Eliot Gardiner's Brahms cycle with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra which sets out to contextualize the composer's symphonies by performing them alongside other key works in his output and allowing them to receive the attention they deserve.

Started in 2021, the cycle of concerts sees the distinguished conductor join forces with one of the world's most tradition-steeped orchestras to present the four symphonies alongside choral works, as well as the composer's two piano concertos.

"All the movements [are] as if from one cast, each one a jewel!" – and none is more jewel-like than the enchanting poco allegretto, arguably one of the most beautiful movements in the entire symphonic repertoire." (Clara Schumann)

Filmed in October 2022, in this third programme in the series, choral pieces written over the course of nearly 30 years of Brahms's career frame the Third Symphony. Arguably less popular than its stablemates, the third is characterized by a dramaturgical arc spanning all its four movements, as the Clara Schumann noted.

The audio version of the recordings of all four symphonies are also being released digitally and on CD on 2 May and are now available for pre-order.
