Here's a really nice modern love song from the up-and-coming Max McNown - a little bit outside the Nashville blueprint perhaps, and that works rather well here.

It's quite straightforward, with nothing particularly challenging to point out, except for the heavy use of "mixed meter". That's the term we use when the number of beats-per-bar varies. In this case, we have frequent use of 3/4 bars (three quarter notes per bar) with 4/4 bars (four quarter notes per bar). You can see good examples of this in bars 4, 8, 12, 16 and so on, throughout the song.

The only part of the song that has consistent meter (4/4 all the time) is the bridge, and that's worth pointing out because after playing all that mixed meter leading up to it, you might be expecting to do more of the same. But no, it's consistent 4/4 throughout, which is actually a clever touch that keeps things from being predictable.

The chords themselves are clear enough on both guitar and uke. Guitar players, if you can't handle the D/F# ("D over F-sharp") shape, just use a plain D there. If you do play the correct D/F#, be sure to hit that lowest note clearly enough that you hear it - you're doubling the bass player at that point, though the bass is not terribly loud in this track. Uke players, we give you a plain D instead of D/F#, because the uke has too high a voice to effectively mimic a bass player, and there's not really a usable shape for that purpose on the uke anyway.

And that's all you need to know. This one's not too hard, so take a crack at it, mixed meter and all, and ENJOY!
