Description

🎸 Robert Johnson – The Mysterious King of the Delta Blues (May 8, 1911 – August 16, 1938 | Died at 27)

Born in Hazlehurst, Mississippi, Robert Leroy Johnson is one of the most legendary and influential figures in American music history. Despite recording only 29 unique songs in his short life, Johnson’s haunting voice, unmatched slide guitar work, and eerie mythos helped shape the foundation of modern blues, rock, and beyond.

Emerging from the Mississippi Delta, Johnson’s style blended raw emotion with fingerpicking finesse and open-tuned slide guitar—techniques that would influence everyone from Muddy Waters and Elmore James to Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, and Jimmy Page. He is best known for the myth that he sold his soul to the Devil at a crossroads in exchange for his prodigious talent—an origin story that fed into his mysterious aura and the tragic brevity of his life.

Johnson’s only known recording sessions took place in 1936 and 1937—first in San Antonio, Texas, and then in Dallas. They would go on to become the Rosetta Stone of blues music.

He died under mysterious circumstances on August 16, 1938, at just 27 years old, making him one of the earliest and most iconic members of what would later be dubbed the “27 Club.”

🕊️ Legacy:

Despite his short life, Robert Johnson’s impact on music is immeasurable. His songs became standards. His lyrics—filled with mystery, restlessness, women, and the supernatural—reflected the soul of the Delta and the pain of the human condition. His guitar playing, especially his use of bottleneck slide and rhythmic innovation, set the blueprint for generations of blues and rock musicians.

He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in its inaugural year (1986) and was ranked #5 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.
