The main riff starts the song, and is used throughout the verse sections. This riff requires a lot of muting to be done by the index finger. This will allow you to keep all the other strings quite when you are doing large string skips in the picking hand.

Frusciante mixes it up a bit as well. At times he is arpeggiating the two notes by alternate picking between the two, and at other times, he is playing them together by strumming across the strings and muting all of the inner strings so that you still only hear the two outside notes.

I will break down in-depth how to accomplish this muting. This main riff is usually repeated the same way each time except for a different melodic ending. I will go through those endings in the order that they appear in the song.

The chorus contains simple barre chords and shouldn't be very difficult for the intermediate level guitarist.

There are 3 solo sections in all, and they all incorporate the use of a guitar slide.

I have covered the first two solos note-for-note, but instead of doing the same for the third solo, I will demonstrate the scales that Frusciante uses live. He doesn't typically play the slide solos live, instead he freely improvises using D minor pentatonic and D natural minor scales. Click on the link below to download the TAB for those scales.
