Welcome to a new series of concerts that we're excited to be launching today, exclusively for followers of the New York Guitar Festival.
As we passed our twentieth anniversary of the Guitar Festival, we’ve been looking to expand our reach beyond New York City and create experiences that we can present more than just a few weeks each spring.
And we also wanted to focus a bit more on the artists and their messages – all in a relaxed, casual atmosphere.
So we've created the Red Sofa Concerts – music performed in a friendly, casual environment, complete with conversation between audience and performer. Artists and composers will discuss their music (and anything else that comes to mind), and then perform, discuss, perform some more, and eat and drink together. We'll capture everything on camera and share it in short videos, and full-length versions.
The Red Sofa right now lives at the Jersey Shore, but it will be travelling wherever great musicians need a place to sit, and an eager audience is ready to listen.
We've chosen today specifically because it's Django Reinhardt’s birthday, and we invited Stephane Wrembel to be our first featured performer. Stephane fits the bill perfectly as he is a marvelously articulate artist with incredible chops and a mind like a server farm filled with art, philosophy, music and a few other topics he shared with us.
Today's just a teaser of what the full-length versions will offer– but you'll see and superb artistry, from Stephane's recent recording of music composed by Django Reinhardt.
And to add to our Red Sofa Concerts launch, we're also including one of the three known recordings by Django of the same work. This is a rare performance of Django playing electric guitar, live in Chicago, 1946. It's just the audio, but it's been out of print for many years.
