Clifton Chenier, the influential Louisiana musician who helped establish zydeco—a unique blend of Creole music and R&B—passed away in 1987 due to complications from diabetes-related kidney disease. However, as a true musical pioneer, his legacy continues to resonate. Today marks what would have been Chenier’s 100th birthday, and it’s being celebrated in a major way: Smithsonian Folkways has announced the release of the first-ever box set devoted entirely to his music. In a fitting tribute, the Rolling Stones—who themselves are approaching their own centennial—have also unveiled a cover of one of Chenier’s most iconic tracks, “Zydeco Sont Pas Salés.”
